Hi guys! My name is Shima and I am one of your Co-Presidents for this school year! I’m from Mukilteo, WA, and I am a senior majoring in Microbiology with a minor in Global Health. I am involved with Her Campus magazine, the Microphiles journal, and MAPS (obviously) on campus, and I am currently an undergraduate researcher at UW Medicine CERID! In my free time, I like to embroider, bake, watch Netflix, and spend time with my family. I have been a MAPS member since my freshman year at UW, and I originally joined to find a community of like-minded minority students on campus, to learn more about underserved populations in medicine, and to see if the pre-med path is right for me. I have loved being a part of MAPS, and I am so excited to be Co-President with Lily this year and connect with all of you! :)

Hello everyone!! My name is Lily Zavala. I’m from Mount Vernon, Washington, and I am serving as one of your Co-Presidents for this upcoming school year. I am starting my senior year at the University of Washington, majoring in public health with a minor in Spanish. I am currently involved in several different organizations on campus. For example, I am a member of Phi DE and a part of the team at the Office of Healthcare and Equity at the School of Medicine. I am also currently involved in public health research, which works to address language barriers in limited English proficiency patients and emergency services. I also work on research that aims to provide Hispanic caregivers with information to help facilitate care delivery to Alzheimer/dementia patients. In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball, cooking, baking, and spending time outdoors. I joined MAPS during my first year to establish a community, learn more about the application process, and learn more about opportunities for minority students in healthcare. Every person has their own story and experiences to bring to the table, and it’s important to acknowledge who these people are and where they come from. I am so glad I have the opportunity to learn from and network with doctors who look like me, and I am excited for you all to see what we have planned for this upcoming school year!

Hi! My name is Emily Ramirez, and I am one of your MAPS Pre-Health Conference Chairs for this year! I am double majoring in Physiology and Public Health-Global Health, and I am also on the pre-MD/PhD track. I joined MAPS my first year at UW and loved it so much I decided to become part of the leadership team! As the daughter of immigrants and a multiracial individual, I felt that MAPS was the most inclusive and supportive community at UW. Over the past two years in MAPS, I have learned how to approach patients holistically, about the application process, and how to pursue a career working with underserved communities. Outside of MAPS, I conduct research in multiple disciplines, mentor middle school students, work on educationreform policy, and play tennis! I look forward to meeting all of you and working towards building a more equitable healthcare system in which everyone can thrive!!

Hey everyone!
My name is Trinity Terlaje, and I’m the MAPS Co-Conference Chair for the 2023-24 board. I was born and raised on the island of Guam and am currently in my junior year studying Biochemistry. In my free time, I love to do arts & crafts or watch k-dramas on Netflix. Over the summer, I had a shadowing internship and a job at the local hospital but will be focusing on my research lab throughout the school year. Since joining MAPS as a freshman, many healthcare professionals have encouraged me to pursue my career ambitions and to serve minority communities. It’s inspired me to lead new members and to create the same opportunities that fueled my passions for the healthcare field and for advocacy for its equitable future. I hope to see you at the next meeting!

Hey there! I'm Shubham Bansal, and I'm excited to be part of MAPS at the University of Washington. Although I was born in Detroit, I spent the majority of my life in Mukilteo, Washington. Currently, I am a sophomore planning to major in biochemistry with the intention of going to medical school.  Beyond my love for bouldering, running, and soccer, I'm passionate about joining a community of underrepresented pre-health students. MAPS has helped me to explore new avenues in medicine and has connected me with so many peers who are also interested in navigating through the world of healthcare.  I am driven to become a socially conscious healthcare professional and create a positive impact in the world of medicine. This RSO has been one of the most exciting experiences I have at at UW, and I cannot wait to make new memories!

Hi everyone! My name is Tuan, the Community Service and Philanthropy Chair of MAPS for 2023-2024. Des Moines, WA is where I am from (and Saigon, Vietnam is where I was born)! I am a third-year student and  in the last year of the MLS program. I love dining out and enjoying social time with friends and family. I also enjoy watching random videos on YouTube and learning about various topics, from fashion to philosophy! I joined MAPS during my freshman year as the club provides pre-health resources and opportunities that help me become a stronger medical school applicant. I also cherish the friendships and community that I have found here at MAPS. I encourage any pre-health students who belong to any marginalized identities to join us, and together we can learn how to better serve the underserved minorities in the healthcare field!

Hi everyone! I’m Ben, and I am your Director of Communications this year! I’m from the Twin Cities area in Minnesota, and I’m currently planning on double-majoring in biochemistry and neuroscience. Over this past summer, I worked as a CNA in a local memory care facility, and in a transplant immunology lab at UW Medicine. In my free time, I love to hang out with friends outdoors, cook, and explore cool restaurants. I joined MAPS last year looking to find a community of individuals with similar academic interests as me, with a passion for embracing diversity. I’m incredibly grateful to have not only found that, but also to have learned so much about the healthcare field and its marginalized communities. I’m looking forward to another year with MAPS and to see all of you at our next meeting! :)
